So, I made it to Oak Ridge OK (it was actually about two weeks ago). I went to Florida first and drove some furniture down from my parents place with my dad. By furniture, I mean an air mattress and a fold up card table and chair. The apartment is actually quite a bit bigger than my place in Berkeley (and half the price); so I have lots of awesome carpet space now. What I don’t have, however, is any of the following: a phoneline, cable, internet or even a TV; so, I have been working at the lab from about 8am to 9pm pretty much everyday. The lab is quite nice, aside from being 15 miles away from any place I could live, necessitating my renting of a car. Now I can’t I can’t be all self-righteous about people driving everywhere and destroying the environment…
At least my work is on solar cells; so, I can sorta say I am still doing my part…
The “city” of Oak Ridge on the other hand seems to be what you would get if you take a small southern city (something like Anderson, SC) and then remove all the industry and drop the population by ¾… There is a Walmart and mall where the inside is completely empty because all the stores left, a few restaurants and Starbucks (where at least my att DSL account from Cali allows me to use the wifi for free). Knoxville is pretty close by, which offers a bit more excitement, and I think I will head to Nashville and Memphis over a couple weekends.
